The regulations that govern self managed super funds allow for the trustee to be either individual member(s) or a corporate entity (Company). The regulations specify that for a trustee that comprises of individuals, each member must be a trustee of the fund and for a trustee that comprises of a corporate entity, each director of the company must be a member of the fund.

The regulations that govern self managed super funds allow a maximum of 4 members. If the fund comprises of a corporate entity as the trustee, each member of the fund must be serving as a director of the "trustee company" and each director of the "trustee company" must be a member. The regulations allow for a sole director of a "trustee company" to be the single member of a single member SMSF.
